Randall Bird is among the latest entrepreneurs to throw his hat into the ring of online gifting. His company, Giftopia, vows to take the guesswork and risk out of gift giving. This is what gift-card programs and registries have always claimed to do. However, where Bird hopes to set his business apart is in Giftopia’s very structure.

The company delivers its services through Giftopia.me, a free social networking site that works a lot like Facebook. People sign up online and then create their custom gifting profile, posting details on what they wish for, along with photos, item prices, favorite stores and their locations, clothing sizes and anything else that might steer their loved ones in the right direction when the time comes to look for gifts. Giftopia also keeps track of birthdays, anniversaries or any other important dates, so that users can plan their shopping trips accordingly.

Just like on Facebook, Giftopia account holders can invite their friends to connect on the network. Once approved, these new contacts are able to see their profile and start interacting.

For example, if Dan sees that his buddy Jim has posted details on a Ralph Lauren decanter he saw on The Bay website on his Giftopia wish list, then Dan might decide to add it to his own list as well. To do so he would select the decanter, click on the “Grab This” button and the item would automatically be added to his list, while remaining on Jim’s list.

The site also features a Gift of Kindness tab, for people who’d rather give someone a hand than a bought present. So if Dan decides to help Jim complete his tax return, he would write a small note with a description of the professional services he’s offering, select Jim from his Giftopia contacts and send the note.

“Our goal is to make gift shopping…quick, easy and completely satisfying for everybody involved,” Bird said.
“With Giftopia, keeping track of changing sizes, color choices and favorite brands for your family and network of friends is simple and painless. [It] gets rid of the stress and anxiety associated with traditional gift giving and receiving, while creating a fun social networking experience at the same time.”

Users can sign into their Giftopia account with Facebook and access it from any computer or smart phone (Android, BlackBerry or iPhone platform). The networking site is also connected to:
