With its “Think Pink When You Think Green” tagline, Woodgrove Centre commonly brings two social issues to the forefront, acting as a leader in both health and healing. As the host venue of a series of annual recycling events throughout the year in support of Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation, the shopping center possesses a permanent positive public profile.

In partnership with the Nanaimo Wave Babes Dragon Boat team, Woodgrove Centre welcomes the delivery of old electronics, scrap metal, and refundable bottles and cans. Setting up shop three times a year in January, April and October, the one-day fundraiser features pink collection bins for the green initiative.

“The Nanaimo Wave Babes Dragon Boat team provides the volunteers. Woodgrove provides them with space in the parking lot, our 20 x 20 tent, and tables for the [daylong] event,” said Nola Dunn, marketing manager.

While dropping off is free of charge, the Nanaimo Wave Babes make money based on the weight of all goods received. That chunk of change then goes toward the purchasing of new breast cancer screening equipment.

To create awareness of both social issues and the fundraiser, Woodgrove Centre uses in-mall digital signage, website updates, and social media postings. Listed under the “Sales and Events” tab on the mall’s website are recommended products for delivery and a link to Regional Recycling to learn more about potential contamination.
