Having already teamed up with GrowNYC for a handful of Stop ‘n’ Swap events, The Shops at Atlas Park knows what to expect from the partnership. With a mission to improve New York City’s quality of life and secure a clean and healthy environment for future generations, GrowNYC consists of four major programs: Greenmarket, Recycle, Garden, and Education. Funded by the New York City Department of Sanitation, the Stop ‘n’ Swap initiative encourages members of the public to recycle clean, reusable and portable items that no longer serve a purpose in their personal household. With everything from clothing to electronics to books available, the “Take something new-to-you for free” tagline rings true to all swappers.

While working in a previous position, Peter M. Delucia Jr., the center’s property manager, established a business relationship with the organization. Although switching roles, Delucia continues to serve as an advocate for GrowNYC and activates its mandate. A component of the Zero Waste Program, Stop ‘n’ Swap improves engagement with the Queens community, promises Atlas Park shoppers a rich shopping experience, and leads widespread promotion for environmentally conscious behavior.

“By participating in community swaps, New Yorkers simultaneously reduce their contribution to landfills and prevent waste that comes from the production, packaging and transportation required to get new things,” says Delucia Jr.

Steps to achieving a successful event turnout include: coordinating social media activity, sharing the Stop ‘n’ Swap event calendar on the Queens Community Board No. 5, and communicating with all center representatives.
