BRAEHEAD BIG SCREEN-LWGary Turnbull doesn’t mind too much if shoppers have a hard time to pry themselves away from the TV from time to time, as long as they’re at his center. The operations GM at Glasgow, Scotland’s Intu Braehead had a giant screen installed above the property’s central atrium so that customers could watch the news, the recent Commonwealth Games and other top sporting events, as well as programming of various types like movie trailers, music videos, and ads. The unit is hooked up to terrestrial and satellite channels, and delivers pictures via fiber optic TV.

“We’ve got the biggest television set in any shopping center in Scotland and innovations like this at the mall are aimed at giving shoppers the best experience when they come to visit us,” he said at the time of the unveiling.

“Obviously, there’s a huge interest in the Commonwealth Games going on in Glasgow just now and we’re streaming live coverage of all the events on our big screen. But we’re able to screen any program [our customers] can get on [their] television at home and a lot more. The screen has been quite an attraction for shoppers and they’ve been saying to our staff how great the picture quality is.”

The Intu Braehead promotional team couldn’t resist the urge of getting a super-size remote to turn on the screen. It was likely not such an extravagance, given that the TV itself cost just over £200,000 ($322,000).
