trendz web winter spring bentall coffeeThere are no nurseries at Cloverdale Mall and Eglinton Square, yet on April 25th hundreds of shoppers lined up to get their potting soil there. That day marked the official launch of the Grounds to Gardens program, which since 2013 has allowed the two Canadian centers to collect 116,540 pounds of coffee grounds from their food retailers and turn them over to Reground Organics to mix with nutrients to produce potting soil. The launch was local residents’ first chance to find out more about the program and the centers’ sustainability commitment.

“Coffee grounds at these properties used to be sent to landfill with other waste where they emit greenhouse gases,” noted Darren Neeley, Eglinton Square’s marketing manager.

“By collecting these grounds, we’ve given them a whole new use, while making a difference to the environment,” added Jennifer Bolton, marketing director of Cloverdale Mall, whose numerous environmentally friendly processes have earned it 3RCertified status from the Recycling Council of Ontario.

Beyond diversion from landfill, the Grounds to Gardens’ launch was also the centers’ way of encouraging shoppers to properly discard their own waste at a joint Community Drive-up E-Waste Collection. Residents could pick up a free 18-liter bag of potting soil if they dropped off their electronic waste or made a $2 donation to the Evergreen not-for-profit organization whose mission is to make Canadian cities more livable. The first 100 shoppers to arrive at each center earned a bonus $5 gift card (either a Best Buy Mobile card at Cloverdale Mall or a McDonalds card at Eglinton Square), and 2,276 customers entered contests to win one of five $50 coffee gift cards.

Together, Cloverdale Mall and Eglinton Square raised $3,888 for Evergreen through in-mall cash donations, which represented 1,944 bags of soil. They handed out another 770 bags at the outdoor swap, collecting 15,502 lbs of e-waste.
