Cary Towne Center has taken an active role in building kids with character in its community. As part of the Wake County Public School System’s Character Education Program, youngsters visiting the North Carolina mall during the school year can earn rewards for displaying desirable character traits, such as responsibility, courage and kindness.
Each month, Cary Towne Center posts a Character Rewards newsletter on its Website. It includes a definition of the featured character trait, tips on how kids can display it, suggestions for parents on how to reward good character, and notable quotes.
October is Respect month, so the center’s newsletter lists many ways in which children could show respect to others and themselves, too.
In recognition of Red Ribbon Week, which takes place this month, the center stresses the importance of children showing respect for themselves by saying no to drugs and avoiding negative peer pressure.
Participating kids are encouraged to work on tips and think of other ways to be respectful. They can then ask their parents/guardians to fill out the bottom part of the newsletter, which doubles as a Certificate of Respect. After that, the kids return the certificate to their teacher who stamps it.
The kids can then bring their stamped certificate to the mall and redeem it for a coupon entitling them to the month’s perk: one free small ice-cream cone from Chick-Fil-A or their chosen treat (two free egg rolls or a bowl of fried rice or a bowl of vegetables) from Sakura. The coupon is valid until November 30. .
